PR not DIY.

Commenting on the publication of the House of Commons Reform Committee Report entitled Rebuilding the House, Peter Facey, Director of Unlock Democracy said:
“We welcome this important report, however without more fundamental reform, these recommendations will merely paper over the cracks of an increasingly fragile democratic institution, and represent little more than political DIY.”
“Only a House of Commons elected with a more proportional electoral system will be truly responsive to the public and restore trust in the so called Mother of Parliaments. We therefore urge the Government to introduce legislation enabling a referendum to be held in the Parliament without delay.
“These are important recommendations which strengthen the House of Commons and return power from the Executive to Parliament. However MPs must recognise that to properly rebuild the House they cannot do it all by themselves. That is why we urge all MPs to support the Citizens’ Convention Bill, to give the public a central role in deciding how the political system should be reformed.”

If the gate was open, we wouldn’t need to unlock it. We don’t share your pessimism.

Real change requires a hung parliament. This in turn requires voters to support the Tories in the Labour seats at the top of the Tory target list, but to help Labour hold on in seats they hold from the Tories by more than 10%. That way neither party will gain a Commons majority.
