Charter88 welcomes increase in Prime
Minister's accountability
Released
26th April 2002
Responding to the announcement that
the Prime Minister will appear before the Liaison Committee of the
House of Commons every six months, Chris Lawrence-Pietroni, Acting
Director of Charter88, commented:
"This is a very positive step for the Government, Parliament
and democracy. The image which is portrayed of the Prime Minister
and politicians at PMQs is harmful to public attitudes towards our
democracy. Appearing before a select committee will give the public
a chance to hear detailed discussion and questioning of the Prime
Minister's work in a more constructive and less partisan forum."
"Let us hope that this is another step towards greater power
and influence for MPs and Parliament in holding the Government to
account."
"This is a welcome acknowledgement that we have a Prime Minister's
department in all but name, and that the huge range of activity
now centred in No.10 must be accountable to Parliament."
Chris Lawrence-Pietroni is available for interview.
