Statement on Occupy London
Unlock Democracy does not have an economic policy, but we strongly welcome the crucial role that Occupy London has been playing in highlighting the importance of democratic reform of the Corporation of London.
It is startling that in the 21st century a central part of London still operates using the medieval guild system. It is frankly shocking that modern global capital has been using this system to advance its agenda, below the radar, for decades.
Occupy London’s demands for the municipal role of the Corporation of London’s council to be replaced by a democratic system based on the principle of one-person-one-vote, for its work to be made subject to the Freedom of Information Act and for a record of its lobbying activity to be made public, are entirely reasonable and should be echoed by all democrats regardless of their other political views.
