The select committee system was established in 1980 to improve scrutiny of the work of the main government departments.

The committees are empowered to conduct inquiries on issues that they think are important and are within their remit. They take evidence from experts, MPs, Ministers and othe rinterested parties and report to the House Of Commons on their conclusions.

Most select committees scrutinise the work of a particular government department but some examine particular areas of policy. The Constitutional Affairs Committee scrrutinises the work of the Department for Constitutional Affairs while the Public Administration Select Committee looks more generally at issues of public asministration and can examine policy issues that cut across departments.

Another very important committee is the Privileges Committee which examines allegations of misconduct against individual MPs.
