Objectives
Reconnecting people and politics
The New Politics Network is an independent political and campaigning think tank, concerned specifically with issues relating to democratic renewal and popular participation in politics. We work with a wide range of groups and individuals to provide a forum to look at emerging ideas in society. Our goal is to provide an independent and innovative debate on the future of politics.
We stimulate debate and campaign on issues relating to political and democratic structures, processes, disaffection with political culture and popular participation in politics. Our regular publications feature new thinking on these political issues.
Sharing best practice and new ideas
We encourage cooperation and the sharing of best practice between people and organisations involved in the modernisation of politics. We bring together politicians, policy makers, journalists, voluntary sector workers, academics and grassroots campaigners to write for our events and campaigns. By sharing ideas, experience and campaign case studies, we aim to develop and disseminate ideas to reskill the political process.
The Network currently has three main areas of focus:
- Reform of public institutions
- The role of political parties
- Citizenship and participation
History and Funding
The Network was created in December 1999. It was established following the winding up of Democratic Left. DL was itself the legal successor to the Communist Party of Great Britain. The Network is not a political party and its mission bares no relation to those of its predsecessors.
Unlike its predecessors the Network is politically independent and is committed to working across the political spectrum. The organisation takes no formal ideological position. To this end the Network has worked with individuals from all the main political parties and is committed to continuing to do so.
From its predecessor it inherited its main assets: two small office buildings in central London. These are held by our subsidiary company Rodell Properties Ltd and provide the Network with a small but stable income. In 2003 Rodell's fixed assets were valued at 1.8 million pounds. On top of this the Network receives money from its members, supporters and grants from foundations and trusts.
