Have a Merry Christmas and a Democratic New Year from all of us at Unlock Democracy!
2006 has been a terrible year for British democracy. The 'loans for peerages' affair has highlighted all too clearly why there should be no place for patronage in Parliament. Two-thirds of the public supports a predominantly or wholly elected second chamber, yet politicians have fudged this issue for years.
Although there are signs that the Government has finally accepted that the second chamber must have some elected members, much more work must be done to ensure that MPs vote for a predominantly or wholly elected second chamber. We can't do this without your help.
There is a clear consensus on Lords reform, even if a small minority of vested interests may disagree. We must not allow reactionary elements to abuse Parliament's medieval procedures in order to derail the reform process, as happened in 2003.
You can help us in three ways: by writing to your MP, by sending this eCard to your friends and family and by sending us a donation. Simply click on the links below.
Many thanks!
